03 IMPLEMENT

Sandbox, demo environment

Discover and test use cases with pre-validated tools before you deploy.

  • Who it is forCities and their teams (end-users), and innovators and solution providers (developers).
  • How it is deliveredA safe online sandbox environment, with guided onboarding and expert support.
  • Starting pointA roadmap, a shortlist of tools, or a component you want to integrate.
  • Main outcomeConfidence in your technology choices, with no risk to live systems.

What this service is for

Use it when you have a public challenge or policy priority, but are not yet sure a Local Digital Twin or CitiVerse approach is relevant. It helps you move from “we have a challenge” to “we know which opportunity areas may be worth exploring.”

  • Do these tools actually fit our needs?
  • Will they work with our data and systems?
  • How do we integrate a new component?
  • Is it safe to deploy?

What you gain

Try before you commit Test on demo data with no risk to live systems.
Real interoperability See how components work together with your data and systems.
De-risk deployment Move forward with evidence, not guesswork.

What you can do in the Sandbox

01 Browse the catalogue of tools Reference Architecture, EDIC repos and LDT Toolbox documentation.
02 Request access A simple form and online onboarding.
03 Run deployment tests Quickstart tutorials to deploy components.
04 Try use-cases on demo data See the LDT Toolbox in action on a concrete scenario.
01 Browse the catalogue of tools Reference Architecture, repos and the EDIC Knowledge Hub.
02 Request access Identifiers and online onboarding.
03 Run deployment tests Quickstart tutorials to deploy components.
04 Test integration Integrate new components and features into the ecosystem.

How to use it

  1. Choose your track — city (end-user) or innovator (developer).
  2. Browse the catalogue and request Sandbox access.
  3. Follow the guided deployment and testing.
  4. Use what you learn to inform your next step — implementation or integration.

Where it can help

Start from the challenge you already have. These are the areas where a Local Digital Twin, a data space or a CitiVerse experience may be relevant.

Climate and heat See where heat and vulnerability are highest, and where to act first.
Water and flooding Compare drainage, flood risk and blue-green infrastructure.
Energy and buildings Inform renovation, solar, grids and district energy with a spatial view.
Air quality and noise Connect pollution, traffic and health so measures are easier to explain.
Public safety Share scenarios for preparedness, training and emergency response.
Health and inclusion Map access, exposure and services to see who is left out.
Participation Make plans visible so residents can understand them and respond.
Culture and heritage Open heritage, tourism and learning through place and story.
Public services Give departments a shared view for planning and maintenance.
Data and governance Find, trust and reuse data across organisations.
Cube houses and the Rotterdam skyline

x-CITE — Rotterdam

Rotterdam, Netherlands

x-CITE uses immersive 3D and extended reality (XR) experiences to help citizens visualise urban transformation scenarios, understand their potential impacts and participate in shaping future developments.

What it demonstrates

How immersive technologies can make urban planning more accessible, understandable and participatory.

DUET — Pilsen

Pilsen, Czech Republic

DUET combines transport, air quality and noise data within a 3D digital twin to explore urban mobility scenarios and assess the potential impacts of transport-related decisions.

What it demonstrates

How digital twins can support evidence-based mobility planning by connecting traffic and environmental data.

LEAD — Madrid Living Lab

Madrid, Spain

LEAD explores low-emission last-mile delivery solutions using urban logistics digital twins. The project examines micro-logistics hubs and alternative delivery scenarios to support more sustainable freight operations.

What it demonstrates

How digital twins can help cities test logistics strategies and evaluate more efficient, low-emission delivery models.

Tools already available in the Sandbox

Available Reference Architecture [AG1.1]

Guidelines, principles, rules and patterns for a networked system of digital twins for the physical environment, so independently built twins can still work together.

Available Adoption Criteria [AG2.1]

A first-level framework assessing whether a product or service fits the EDIC ecosystem: its interoperability, deployability, usability, scalability and strategic fit.

Under validation EU LDT Toolbox [AG3.1]

A European catalogue of ready-to-reuse Local Digital Twin building blocks (tools, data models, guides and recipes) so cities do not build their twin from scratch.

Get Started

For cities & public authorities
Request demonstration access

Get a sandbox account to explore the EDIC tools through the Integrated Environment, in a guided or self-guided demo.

For innovators & providers
Offer a tool for validation

Submit a tool, component or asset to be validated in the Sandbox against the Adoption Criteria, the Reference Architecture and functional testing.
