The European Data Space for Smart Communities (DS4SSCC) has launched its fourth and final deployment round, welcoming seven new pilots involving cities, regions and technology partners across ten European countries.
Running from August to October 2026, this new round places a strong focus on replication, scalability and cross-border collaboration. Rather than starting from scratch, several pilots will build on existing solutions and data space infrastructures, testing how they can be reused and adapted across different cities and local contexts.
The seven pilots — UrbanHive, NEXCITY, BeatTheHeat II, DYNAMO, EMOVA, OmniFlow and STiDS-Mi — will address concrete urban challenges including sustainable mobility, traffic management, climate resilience, zero pollution and urban planning.
One of them, NEXCITY, will connect Valencia and Rotterdam through a shared urban data space. Combining more than 15 types of urban data, the pilot will test seven use cases covering sustainable mobility, weather and climate resilience, zero pollution and the New European Bauhaus.
From experimentation to reusable European infrastructure
The fourth deployment round represents an important step towards demonstrating that urban data spaces can work beyond individual pilots.
By transferring existing solutions to new locations and connecting cities across borders, the projects will provide practical evidence of how trusted and interoperable data infrastructures can be replicated and scaled across Europe.
This is particularly relevant for the LDT CiTiVERSE EDIC. Interoperable data spaces provide an important foundation for Local Digital Twins, enabling cities to access and exchange the data needed to model urban systems, simulate scenarios and develop new data-driven services.
The lessons and resources emerging from DS4SSCC can therefore contribute to the broader European effort to move from isolated digital projects towards shared, reusable infrastructure for cities and regions.
With the DS4SSCC initiative approaching its conclusion at the end of 2026, its final months will focus on capturing the results of all 18 pilots and consolidating resources for future adoption, including the final version of the DS4SSCC Blueprint.
